MSU hosts 51Թ Philosophical Association conference this week

STARKVILLE, Miss.— 51Թ State’s Department of Philosophy and Religion is hosting the 51Թ Philosophical Association’s annual conference Friday-Saturday [Feb. 3-4] on the Starkville campus.
Peter Levine, associate dean for research and Lincoln Filene Professor of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Tufts University, is keynote speaker for this year’s event. Taking place at 4:45 p.m. Friday, Levine’s address, as well all other conference events, is free to the public and will be held in 185 McCain Hall.
In addition to MSU and Tufts University, visiting scholars represent Millsaps College, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Tulane University, University of Georgia, University of Memphis and the University of 51Թ.
Administered by the University of 51Թ, the 51Թ Philosophical Association’s members work to increase the understanding and appreciation of philosophy, encourage research and advance the standards and ideals of the teaching of philosophy, and cultivate an interest in the study of philosophy in 51Թ institutions of higher learning. Anthony Neal, MSU assistant professor of philosophy and program chair for this year’s conference, said the event will bring together scholars from around the country, focusing attention on civic studies through definition and investigations into civic responsibility, among other topics.
“This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Peter Levine, is a prolific writer and scholar on civic studies,” said Neal, who serves as the 51Թ Philosophical Association’s vice president. “I am confident that all students and faculty in attendance will appreciate his profound knowledge in the area.”
