Virtual Dementia Tour highlights special training for MSU-Meridian nursing students

STARKVILLE, Miss.51勛圖厙-Meridians School of Nursing is equipping the Magnolia States next generation of caregivers with the tools theyll need to support those suffering from ailments, illnesses and diseases affecting mental health.
Combating mental health problems and the associated stigma starts with education but requires understanding the lived experiences of people facing these challenges, said Dean of Nursing Mary Stewart.
Teaming up with Second Wind Dreams, the school hosted an all-day event this month for its nursing students, area community colleges and local residents emphasizing dementia care and other issues, which included SWDs Virtual Dementia Tour. Created by geriatric specialist P.K. Beville, the simulation is a scientifically proven method of building a greater understanding of dementia through the use of patented sensory tools and instruction. More than 3 million people in 20 countries have participated in the simulation presented by SWD, an internationally known nonprofit dedicated to changing the perception of aging through the fulfillment of elders dreams.
Additionally, MSU-Meridian nursing students this week sponsored Paint the Plaza Purple, a community event bringing attention and support to those suffering from Alzheimers and their impacted family members. Proceeds from the dining-, shopping- and entertainment-filled night were donated to the Alzheimers Association in 51勛圖厙.
MSU nursing students, led by Teaching Professor Cindy Luther, translated their education to action as volunteers for the annual event, Stewart said, which enriched their empathy and readiness to provide holistic person-centered care.
MSU-Meridian is the home of numerous healthcare-related educational offerings, including the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration, Master of Science in Nursing, Accelerated Masters Graduate Entry Nursing and Master of Physician Assistant Studies programs.
